Some freshmen residing at West Holden Hall will have a unique opportunity to learn about the academic resources that Michigan State University offers via the First Year Experience.
Approximately 600 students will be selected for the program, which will engage them in a variety of services to ease their transition to university life.
“The goals of the program of course would be to enhance their academic success as well as to familiarize them and provide them with the knowledge and easy access to the resources that are available to them on campus,” said Joshua Gillespie, assistant director of the First Year Experience.
Tutors, writing consultants and counselors will help students through the academic year. Counselors from Olin Health Center will offer guidance on how to maintain healthy lifestyles.
The program will also spark students’ action within the community. The program will coordinate with MSU’s Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement to encourage civic responsibility.
“We know that there are a plethora of resources, but in terms of the freshman or first-year student knowing where these are can sometimes be difficult or missed,” Gillespie said.
