With the academic year now in full swing, Lisa Vanwelsenaers, office assistant for the Department of Student Life at Michigan State University, reflects on all the events that keep her busy at the start of the fall semester.
In addition to working with the judicial affairs for the department throughout the year, Vanwelsenaers helps to organize student events such as the fall welcome student engagement sessions, fall welcome convocation, Sparticipation, Moonlight Madness with Meijer, Inc. at both the Lansing and Okemos locations and upcoming programs such as student recruitment events and the fall housing fair.
She also works closely with the more than 600 registered student organizations on campus. This year, about 400 of the organizations had a presence at this year’s Spartan Spectacular, sponsored by the Department of Student Life at Munn Field and the Jack Breslin Student Events Center.
“I don’t think that the tents where the students were set up were empty hardly at all during the entire time,” she said.
Vanwelsenaers has been an employee at MSU for 22 years and with the Department of Student Life for 11 years. “It’s really nice to have a student who will come in and say, ‘thank you, you’ve helped me out tremendously’,” Vanwelsenaers said.
“It’s nice to be able to help students who have questions and don’t really know whom to ask. I also supervise the student workers in our department and really enjoy and appreciate the work they do for us.”
