When it comes to the artistic side of communication arts, assistant professor Henry Brimmer has a rather unique set of experiences – graphic design from the international perspective.

Brimmer came to Michigan State University’s College of Communications Arts and Sciences three years ago to help put the arts back into communication arts.

In 2007, Brimmer traveled to Havana as part of an exhibition for a poster contest involving eight American and eight Cuban designers. While there, he photographed a portion of Cuba’s Malecón seafront.

After turning the photographs into a panoramic of his view, he submitted the piece for another contest and it was accepted. His photomontage will go on display at the upcoming AIGA Center for Cross-Cultural Design exhibition, “Havana Through Your Lens,” in Havana on Nov. 3. Formerly known as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the organization showing Brimmer’s work is now named AIGA, the professional association for design.

“I had decided to take a walk and photograph every building of the Malecón,” Brimmer said. “Every 100, 200 steps I would turn and take a picture of the houses. If I have the opportunity I’d love to go back to Cuba to see the exhibit when it comes up.”
