Harold Schock, professor of mechanical engineering and director of MSU’s Energy and Automotive Research Laboratories, shows U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow a thermoenergy device. Stabenow was at the lab July 8 to announce she had introduced legislation titled the Battery Innovation Act. If passed, the bill would provide increased funding for battery-technology research.

Presidents of WSU, MSU and UM

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, Wayne State University President Allan Gilmour and University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman represented Michigan’s University Research Corridor June 1-3 at the annual Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island. They released a new report focused on URC university support for Michigan’s information technology sector, and announced a New Economy Initiative grant to allow the URC members to help retain international talent in Michigan. A bald eagle rescued near Bay City is being examined at MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Wildlife veterinarian Jim Sikarkskie said the bird has an old injury that has grown arthritic and will not be able to return to the wild. Instead, the bird will be placed in a nature center.
