John Hess, owner of Carved in Stone, hand carves the names of two fallen MSU alumni on Oct. 20 at the MSU Alumni Chapel. Capt. Sean P. Grimes graduated from MSU in 1997 and 1st Lt. Adam M. Malson graduated from MSU in 2003. Grimes was a physician assistant for 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division in Iraq when he was killed in action by a roadside bomb on March 4, 2005. Malson, an infantry officer with the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, was killed by a suicide bomber on Feb. 19, 2005 in Iraq. These two men were the first names engraved in the limestone of the chapel since 1989, which now has the names of 590 fallen MSU Alumni that date back to the Civil War. Photo by Amanda Ross. |

Dozens of Michigan State University students waited in line for up to 90 minutes Nov. 4 to vote in the 2008 presidential election at four campus residence halls. Elections officials reported very few glitches at campus polling sites, which included Brody, Wilson, Owen and Akers halls. Election officials report 6,263 students voted on campus. Photo by G.L. Nine-time Grammy Award-winning jazz musician Wynton Marsalis visited Michigan State University Sept. 22-24. Marsalis was on campus to premier a new piece commissioned by the MSU College of Music, Wharton Center, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He performed it with the MSU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leon Gregorian. Marsalis also spent time as an artist-in-residence lecturing to MSU and high school musicians. |
