EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University faculty, staff and graduate students were recognized Feb. 3 at the State of the University address and 2009 Awards Convocation at Wharton Center's Pasant Theatre.

In her State of the University address, President Lou Anna K. Simon discussed the current economic difficulties and how they affect MSU, reviewed some of last year’s extraordinary accomplishments and looked ahead to the challenges and opportunities in the coming year.

The following awards, recognizing teaching, research and outreach efforts, were presented:

• Distinguished Faculty Awards, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the intellectual development of the university

• Teacher-Scholar Awards, in recognition of dedication and success in teaching

• Outreach Scholarship Community Partnership Awards, in recognition of a mutually beneficial sustained campus-community research partnership

• Excellence-in-Teaching Citations, awarded to graduate assistants in recognition of dedication and success in meeting classroom responsibilities

• MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Awards, in recognition of quality teaching and substantial continuing involvement in undergraduate education

• Distinguished Academic Staff Awards, in recognition of academic specialists and MSU-Extension academic staff who have made significant accomplishments and distinguished themselves in their careers
  
• Robert F. Banks Award for Institutional Leadership, awarded to a member of the faculty, academic staff, or support staff in recognition of extraordinary and sustained institutional leadership that advances MSU's commitment to connectivity, quality and inclusion
