EAST LANSING, Mich. — Due to recent changes in NCAA regulations, the annual Holiday Hoops Invitational high school basketball event is being moved from Michigan State University’s Breslin Center to the Don Johnson Field House at Lansing Eastern High School.

The event was to be held at the Breslin Center on Dec. 29. The date of the event and the games’ starting times will remain the same.

MSU was just recently informed of the changes, which are an effort by the NCAA to more closely monitor the recruiting of high school student-athletes. Within the last seven to 10 days this change has affected a number of NCAA schools which host similar events, including Duke, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Butler and others.

Since being notified of the changes, MSU has worked to determine a way in which Breslin could continue to host the event, which brings together high school basketball teams from around the state. Since that could not be worked out, the decision was made to move the venue to Lansing Eastern’s Don Johnson Field House, which can seat about 6,500 basketball fans.

While complying with the regulation change, the university is disappointed that the high school student-athletes taking part in the event and their parents will not be able to visit MSU and experience one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country.

Tickets purchased directly from the Breslin Center will be issued a full refund. Tickets purchased at participating schools can be used for admission to the event at Don Johnson Fieldhouse. Tickets at the door the day of the event will be $5.

The recent NCAA regulation change states: “According to recent changes in NCAA regulations: “An institution [including any institutional department (e.g., athletics, recreational/intramural)] shall not host, sponsor or conduct a non-scholastic basketball practice or competition in which men's basketball prospective student-athletes participate on its campus or at an off-campus facility regularly used by the institution for practice and/or competition by any of the institution's sport programs. A non-scholastic event is defined based on the entity or person conducting the event, not by the event participants. An event is not a scholastic event simply because the participating teams are high school teams but rather whether a scholastic entity is operating the event.”
