The Michigan Court of Appeals has issued a decision that the Michigan Constitution prohibits public institutions from offering health benefits based on domestic partnership agreements. MSU was not a party to this lawsuit and we did not participate in the proceedings.

We are surprised and very disappointed by the Court's decision and understand that it has caused uncertainty and anxiety for many members of our community. MSU values all of its faculty and staff, and we will do all that we can to maintain access to health care for our eligible employees and their families. A great public university, especially at this time in Michigan, must be inclusive, competitive, and welcoming.

As a result of the Court's decision, we are reviewing the nature of our legal options and commitments with regard to our same-sex domestic partner benefits. We will not make any changes to employee benefit eligibility until we've completed that review. We will communicate with the campus community as new information becomes available.
