EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Association of Broadcasters and Broadcast Music Inc. have named Michigan State University's WDBM “IMPACT 89FM” College Station of the Year.
The gold record award will be presented at the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference at the Lansing Center on March 8.
For the fourth time in the past five years, WDBM-FM has dominated the awards competition.WDBM outscored its nearest competitor by more than two to one.
“As we enter our 15th year on the air, this award affirms the quality and effectiveness of our staff,” said Gary Reid, professional general manager of the station. “We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and honored to represent MSU in such a positive light.”
Individual achievements led to the overall success.
Program Director Brock Elsesser took second place in the Air Check category.
The Public Service Announcement category was swept by WDBM. Ed Glazer, the station manager, took first place, while Holly Giesman, the production director, along with Sam Walton and Brendan Hughes took second place.
Brendan O’Neill, the previous program director, received an honorable mention.
Beth Perrine, Glazer and Giesman took first place in the Promotional Announcement category.
Ryan Longoria and Giesman received an honorable mention in the Sportscast/Play-by-Play category.
The station staff swept the Large Group category with the 14th Birthday Celebration promo in first place, the Valentine’s Day promo in second place and an honorable mention for the Afterglow program promo.
Three staff members also won awards in the video area. Glazer received an honorable mention for his video public service announcement on responsible drinking. Giesman, the production director, worked with Tom Lietz to receive the second place award in the public affairs category for their program on Careers at the Wharton Center.
Professional broadcasters from the state of Michigan judged the awards competition. Located at 88.9 FM, WDBM is a 2,000 watt station which serves the mid-Michigan area from the MSU campus with a staff of about 100 students. This award, along with the previous three gold records, is displayed in the station in G-4 Holden Hall.
