Detroit — Michigan State University admissions and engineering representatives were out in force at Cass Technical High School in Detroit on March 13 and 14 for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition.
This was the first time that Cass Tech partnered with MSU in presenting this event and the first nationally sanctioned competition to be hosted by a nonuniversity and public high school in the United States.
About 2,500 students from more than 50 Detroit area schools took place in this event, which is part of a series of competitions being held throughout Michigan.
Cass Tech is MSU’s first “signatory school.”
“That means we’re going to work hard with Cass Tech to create a pathway for their students to MSU,” said Theo Caldwell, who leads the MSU College of Engineering’s Diversity Programs Office.
“Many in our country believe that education is an expense rather than an investment, but MSU understands that even in lean times, you need to continue to invest in our young people,” said Cass Tech Principal Lenora Ashford.
