Promoting Rigorous Outcomes in Mathematics and Science Education, or PROM/SE, has expanded its parent outreach program to 13 school districts in Michigan and Ohio.
“Mathematics Counts & Science Matters” partners with parents, schools and community organizations to lay the foundation for success in school, and beyond. The program is funded by Michigan State University and the National Science Foundation.
The program provides parents of children in grades K-8 with resources to support their child’s math learning. Parent guides, written in easy to understand language, explain the essential mathematics concepts children need to learn at each grade to ensure a solid foundation for higher-level mathematics. Talking points and other program materials help parents convey to their children how solid math and science skills can open pathways to success in the new 21st century economy.
This year, schools in participating Michigan districts in the Ingham and Calhoun intermediate school districts, as well as in the Cleveland area, distributed program materials to parents at teacher conferences and special meetings. Teams of trained parent volunteers have also stressed the importance of math education through presentations to community and parent groups in their districts.
Parent guides and other program materials can be downloaded at www.promse.msu.edu/mcsm. The Web site also has an extensive list of Web resources for parents and children to assist at-home math learning.
