This fall Michigan State University’s Kellogg Biological Station is offering “Art in Nature” classes.

Classes will focus on basic drawing principles and will introduce the use of sketches in nature journaling. ‘Art in Nature’ is designed for the beginner (ages 13 and older), but the instructor welcomes participants with more advanced drawing skills.

The bird fauna class will be held at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, where participants will observe birds in their natural habitat and sketch their observations. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Fees classes are $105 (or $95 for those that participated in the “Art in Nature” flora classes this past spring). Fees include one journal and drawing paper. Additional supplies needed are drawing and colored pencils, art eraser and ink pen. Participants have the option to bring their own or purchase the additional supplies for $20.

The instructor, Jean Flower, is an avid nature artist. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine art, and has taught art classes at Western Michigan University and the Kalamazoo Institute of Art.

She has worked on displays at the Kalamazoo Public Museum and the Kalamazoo Air Museum. She is also a volunteer at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and enjoys sharing her love of nature with tour groups.

The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, one of North America's pioneer wildlife conservation centers. Is located 15 miles north of Kalamazoo and 12 miles northwest of Battle Creek.
