Michigan State University's School of Journalism invites the public to participate in a summit to explore the future of journalism.

On Sept. 11, the school will host a news summit that will include industry leaders, students, faculty and others interested in the journalism profession.

The summit will be open to the public beginning at 1:30 p.m. Seats will be available in the live audience in Studio E (Room 134 E) of the Communication Arts & Sciences Building. In addition, a live webcast will be available via http://www.spartantv.cas.msu.edu.

Audience seating will be limited, so anyone interested in attending should reserve a seat by emailing jrn@msu.edu. Some limited additional seating may be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event is free to the public.

As the news media retools to face new economic and technology challenges, the MSU J-School is taking a leadership role in redefining journalism and seeking fresh ideas and perspectives on creating viable business models, said acting director Lucinda Davenport.

"Our intent with this series of summits is to truly examine the needs for the future of journalism, and then start to work toward that future together," Davenport said. "Journalism is dynamic and will always be around; it will continue to be a viable force in the future. People need good journalism to help them gather information in order to make productive decisions in their lives."

The first summit in May included a mix of about 20 individuals — journalists, news consumers, students, entrepreneurs, academics and innovators. That event opened dialogue among the diverse set of stakeholders, and led to ideas that will be further explored on Sept. 11.

The School of Journalism celebrates 100 years of journalism education at MSU this academic year.
