EAST LANSING, Mich. — Adam Candeub, associate professor of law at the Michigan State University College of Law, has been named a Fulbright Scholar and will study cybercrime in Croatia, a country he says is at the forefront of integrating economies.
The highly coveted Fulbright grants are issued by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to foster international academic exchange. Each year, about 1,200 U.S. scholars study in more than 155 countries.
Candeub will spend five months in Croatia, where he will present guest lectures at the University of Rijeka and pursue research about computer-based financial crime enforcement and its effects in emerging and developed markets.
"I am very interested in countries that are lowering barriers for international trade and business while also working to combat computer-based financial crimes," said Candeub, acting director of the intellectual property and communications law program. "It's worthwhile for researchers to examine these integrating economies, particularly in places that attempt to strengthen the rule of law."
Candeub said Croatia was among the lead European states to sign and ratify the Convention on Cybercrime, the first international treaty seeking to address computer crime and Internet crimes.
He is among three MSU faculty members who have been named Fulbright Scholars. Also named were Alan Beretta, professor, Department of Linguistics and Languages, who will conduct research in Greece; and Sayuri Guthrie Shimizu, associate professor, Department of History, who will study in Japan.
The application process for 2012-13 Fulbright grants will open Feb. 1. Faculty interested in learning more about the awards or application process should contact MSU's Fulbright coordinator, Roger Bresnahan, at bresnaha@isp.msu.edu.
Or they can contact the agency charged with administering the program for the U.S. government, the Council for International Exchange Scholars, at (202) 686-4000 or scholars@iie.org.
